Safety Riding a Motorbike in Phuket
It’s important to note that driving a motorbike in Phuket can be dangerous, especially if you are not familiar with the local traffic laws and road conditions (i.e., traffic may not follow the normal road rules you may expect!)
When using a motorbike in Phuket, following safety rules is important to ensure your well-being and minimize the risk of accidents or injuries. Here are some good safety rules to keep in mind:
- Wear a Helmet: Always wear a helmet that isapproved by the local authorities and fits appropriately. This is mandatory in Thailand and can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in case of an accident (and if pulled over by the police without one, you will likely be fined)
- Observe Traffic Laws: Follow all traffic laws, including speed limits, traffic signals, and road signs. Avoid reckless driving, speeding, or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Be Cautious at Intersections: Be extra cautious at intersections, as they can be busy and unpredictable. Look for oncoming traffic from all directions, and avoid sudden maneuvers or lane changes.
- Be Aware of Road Conditions: Phuket roads can vary in quality, and some areas may have potholes, uneven surfaces, or loose gravel. Be cautious and adjust your speed accordingly to avoid accidents or skidding.
- Watch Out for Other Road Users: Be mindful of other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorbike riders. Be patient, use your horn when necessary, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Use Lights and Signals: Use your headlights, taillights, and turn signals to communicate your intentions to other road users. This helps increase visibility and reduces the risk of collisions.
- Avoid Overloading: Avoid carrying excessive passengers or cargo on your motorbike, as it can affect your balance and maneuverability.
- Stay Alert and Focused: Stay alert and focused while riding, avoiding distractions such as using mobile phones or listening to music. Keep both hands on the handlebars and both feet on the footrests at all times.
- Get Adequate Insurance: Ensure you have adequate motorbike insurance coverage, including liability, collision, and medical coverage. Check your insurance policy to ensure it meets the legal requirements in Thailand.
- Get Proper Training: If you are not an experienced rider, consider taking a motorbike safety course or getting proper training before riding in Phuket. Familiarize yourself with local driving customs and road conditions.
Remember that motorbike accidents are common in Phuket, and it’s crucial to prioritize safety at all times. Always exercise caution, obey traffic laws, and use common sense when riding a motorbike in Phuket or any other destination.

More Motorbike renting tips
- Make sure to check the bike’s condition before you take off so you are not liable for any damage or scratches – take a quick video before you hop on.
- Only ever leave a copy of your passport behind, never your original passport – scam alert!!
- Check what exactly you are insured for; if the rental store’s insurance is not adequate, will your travel insurance cover you?
- You may be charged a small additional fee for helmet hire, but note it is compulsory for the rider and any passengers to have a helmet under local laws.
- You should have an A2 motorcycle license and an International Drivers Permit – though the reality is, this is rarely checked; at your peril if pulled over by the police.
