What to Do in Phuket With Kids When it Rains

by Mama Loves Phuket

Although long sunny days at the beach may not be possible throughout your rainy season visit to Phuket, you can still slot plenty of fun family activities into your itinerary.

One thing we’ve learnt over the years is that the day-to-day weather can be truly difficult to predict, and things can change quickly, so always have a few different weather apps on your phone and listen out for local news broadcasts with severe weather warnings.

So, assuming it’s not torrential storms and safe enough to hit the roads for a day out, here’s what we’d recommend you get on your rainy reason Phuket itinerary:

Indoor Activities For Rainy Days

  • Take a cooking class! The perfect indoor activity is to try your hand at making local cuisine. Many hotels offer this ‘in-house’ so you don’t have to travel anywhere to gain some great new skills in the kitchen and get a meal out of it, too!
  • Indulge in a spa day. Go beyond the beach massages and splash out a little more for a wonderfully airconditioned and luxurious treat indoors. We’ve used and love Oasis Spa, which has a few West Coast locations.
  • If you’re keen to take in a little more local culture, try Phuket Mining Museum. It’s relatively cheap to enter, and you can learn more about the tin industry that helped establish Phuket Town with signage in English & Thai.
  • If you are staying in Patong, Junceylon is another good indoor spot away from the rain. Froggys Fun Park is a popular spot with kids, or with younger tots, try Kidzoona. For older kids and adults, the SF Cinema is a good shout indoors and very airconditioned (i.e., bring something warm!).
  • The SF Strike bowling centre in Jungcelyon looks to now be closed, but you could try bowling at Phuket Graceland Resort & Spa in Patong, we’re advised that non-hotel guests can also book the lanes here.
  • If you’re staying in the south of the island, Phuket Aquarium can be a nice half-day activity for younger kids.
  • The Upside Down House & Maze in Phuket is a great rainy-day activity. The house named Baan Teelanka (in Thai means Upside Down House) is ideal for those rainy days or if you’re looking for something unusual to experience
  • Get creative at Fickle Lifestyle – think splash painting, crafts, clay, candle making, woodwork, and jewellery making.
  • For some indoor adrenaline and adventure, try Rebel Rock Climbing in Thalang. Or if you’re up for a real blast, there are 24 indoor galleries at Phuket Shooting Range with lessons (there’s also archery, paintball and Go-Karting here for less soggy days!)
  • If the ocean is too choppy, why not bring your underwater education indoors at Ocean Zone Diver, get started with your beginner scuba training.
  • We have yet to check it out, but we understand the Ice Arena is now open for year-round indoor ice skating.

A few others that used to be on our list but now look permanently closed (but we still see pop up in recommendation lists – this is why you don’t rely on AI) include Escape Hunt, Kees Kids Club, Acorn Kids Cafe, Unicorn Dreams cafe, 3D Museum/The Selfie Experience.

Kids Play Centres

Adding to the above list, with little kids you can’t keep contained indoors, you may want to check out:

Dining Out

When it’s wet outside, what better time to pop into some of the island’s cosy indoor restaurants and cafes? Appealing to families, why not try:

  • Mad Hog Tavern Phuket (formerly Hogs Head Tavern) – filled with Harry Potter-themed paraphernalia, we suspect they may have been headed a bit too far down the copyright infringement alley, but still some fun magical touches
  • Thaivetro Oldtown Ice Cream – is not a huge shop, but it has the best range of ice cream in Phuket with over 80 flavours!
  • Waylany Kids Cafe – is a cute and cosy family venue with an indoor playground

We’re still adding to this list, so bear with us as we explore more of Phuket in the rainy season with kids!

Phuket Outdoor Activities on Rainy Days

  • An elephant sanctuary visit. Yup, even in the rain, this can still be enjoyable, as the elephants love getting muddy! It may be preferable to visiting on a hot sunny day as the elephants are more active and staff will help you with welly boots and a dry place to shelter while observing the elephants at play.
